Mike's Pilot Log: South to South Adventure

The Atlantic glistened in the distance on our right.

We took off quite early and headed down the Fish River Canyon. It is an amazing sight, this huge Canyon with near-vertical walls, and little pools of water in a desert landscape. Near to the southern end of the Canyon, we descended right down to just 200 ft above the dried-up river bed and the hotel at Ai-ais.

After 2 hours of flying, we crossed the Orange River and at last in South Africa. I thought about when we had started off from Buenos Aires, and how we had decided to not talk about arriving in South Africa, because it seemed too far away and like something impossible to achieve.

The Atlantic glistened in the distance on our right and slowly we moved closer. Once we were over the coast, we descended and flew low level towards Hondeklipbaai, which was to be our next stop. Olivier and I chased each other with our trikes, flying around each other like children at a party.

At Hondeklipbaai, we landed on the same road that we had used when we had flown northwards on our 1995 cape to Cape expedition, and taxied into the same small fuel station. After filling up, we taxied through the town to a small bed and breakfast place and ordered a full English breakfast. The rest of the day was spent relaxing around the pool.

In the late afternoon we taxied through the town to another bed and breakfast place where we spent the night.
